Professional Development

Our school has many crutches that we lean on at our school. We have some who pulls most of our TAKS and DBA data and gives us copies of how our students are doing. This makes us less likely to access this data and use it through our technology resources.

I believe we can construct a professional development that will give our teachers hands on experience in collecting and analyzing their data. We can use all of the data that is at our fingertips such as the CIP, TAKS/DBA scores, and the Star Chart. We can teach them how to access and analyze this data.

A developmental session can also be taught on how to identify trends and strategies that will help them affect the learning of their students. There are significant trends that when students are able to learn in ways that are relevant to them and their style of learning they drastically improves their desire to learn. Technology is a constant avenue our students drive down every day and we must teach them how to navigate the technology to increase their ability to become productive students and citizens.

Advancing with Technology

The advancement of our educational system has always been a primary obective in our country. But now the best tools we can use to advance the learners engagement is by accessing technology. The U.S department of Education release a report the details National Educational Technology Plan. It details goals and recommendations for learning, assessment, teaching, infrastructure, and productivity. It details how we want learners to have an engaging and empowering learning experiences in and outside of the classroom. They will also use technology to leverage the ability to measure the learners knowledge. Technology will be readily accessible to our teachers so they are able to access data, content, and resources to provide an effective learning experience. Schools will be supplied the infrastructe to properly facilitate these goals. The school as a whole will take advantage of these resources to make continued progress in all areas of instruction. It also talks about improving learning through connected teaching. Teachers will need to become well versed on how to develop students in communication collaboration, problem solving using various technology based applications. This calls for a 21st century teacher that will challenge our systems and be creative and innovative in their approach to teaching. Tools, resouces, and time will be need to accomplish these goals. It will be neccessary to develop and design technology based curriculum and online communities. Teachers will have to sent to extensive trainings and be able to teach others in these approaches. This report set the stage, we must step up and meet the challenge.

The Progress

The state of Texas produces a report each year that documents the progress that is made with our school systems technology integration. The goals are set in the LRPT, Long range plan for technology. What is interesting is that it goes through a process of teacher's self evaluation on their use and implementation of technology in their classrooms. It has four key areas, Teaching and learning, Educator prepartion and development, Leadership, Administration, and instructional support, and Infrastructure. The levels of measure are early tech, developing tech, advanced tech, and target tech. In results from the 2008/2009 school year teachers ranked themselves as 2.95% early tech, 65.7% developing tech, 30.5% advanced tech, and .8% target tech. In the 2009/2010 school year the results were 2.1% early tech, 59.3% developing tech, 37.8% advanced tech, and .9% target tech. The results show that we are making strides toward our goals in technology. Specificially in the movement from developing tech to advanced tech. This shows that we are doing a better job of communicating the neccesity for our teachers to progress to the 21st centurty standards of education. This is definately going to improve our ability to have effective communication and collaboration in our classrooms using digital technology. Our schools advancement is very similiar to the states assessment. We have the majority of our staff in the developing tech category. Our administration continues to provide resources so that we are equipped to take the next step in transforming our classrooms into technology driven learning centers.

Teaching and Learning

In the Texas Long Range Plan for technolgy there is a section that is called teaching and learning. In this section it describes the need to have access to relevant technology, tools and resouces for individualized instruction. Teacher must have the ability to use this information and communications technologies to collaborate and provide real world solutions. With the data age of students we must be able to effectively give them varied formats of instruction that will challenge and intrigue them. Teachers have to become effective communicators and research methods that are strategically centered around technology. Local school districts have responded to this mandate by allowing teachers to have access to more and more technology to experiment and develop strategies for their specific fields of study. Now we have to ask ourselves what will move us to the next level. It is going to take the teachers having an open mind to change the practices they have taught for all these years. It is also going to take resources to train and prepare these teachers to be effective in the classroom with technology. As we continue to embrace new strategies of teaching and reaching our students through technology, we must continue to raise the standard of learning. Technology is a necessary change that will hep our students to have a greater engagement in their learning.
